DEMOGRAPHICS
Though I did not specifically dedicate a certain section to demographics, I tried to put bits and pieces in each section. No single highlighted thing down below is actually talking numbers about what the demographics were but they give some information on how the demographics were eventually affected. One point I mention multiple times is how the land expansion gave more room for people to live and further expand our population. Hopefully you can see how some of this may have been related to the demographics.
In the future, I will try to put my theme in its own section.
During Thomas Jefferson's two terms as President of the United States of America, some very successful things happened. This includes the expansion of our country's demographics with events such as the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark expedition. Because of this success, Thomas Jefferson deserves an A-. The reason for not getting the full A+ is because his initial intentions were not as it ended up being.
In Thomas Jefferson's first inaugural address, he talked about how all the colonists were different in every little way such as race, religion, politics and other beliefs, but that that shouldn't stop anybody from uniting as one heart and one mind. He saw that everybody was there in our country for similar reasons. Later in his second inaugural address, Thomas Jefferson was all about expanding our country to ensure that the land was owned by the United States of America and them only. He did not want to be sharing land with others. As far as his first inaugural address goals, America was rather calm, without any disputes happening inside our country's borders. The colonists lived in harmony just like he wanted. But that was inside our country. Outside, there were a few confrontations such as the Tripolitan War in the Mediterranean. Here, some American naval ships went over to try and slap some sense into the Barbary Pirates. Unfortunately, a couple of ship passengers got held hostage and our country had to pay ransom as well as other tribute payments for the next decade. Besides that one instance, Thomas Jefferson met his goal when no incidents happened inside our country's borders. Later on in his terms as president, Thomas Jefferson was a part of the Louisiana Purchase. At first, Jefferson had plans to just buy New Orleans and west Florida. But when Napoleon presented him with this bigger offer, he accepted it right away. This ended up meeting his second goal by buying the land from the French and allowing Americans to live in land, unoccupied by other countries. This purchase more than doubled the size of our country and gave the citizens plenty of room to live their lives. Overall, Thomas Jefferson met his goals. . Along with a president comes the Congress that runs the country with them. If things between the two aren't connecting, then the country will not run smoothly. In Thomas Jefferson's first term, everything went normal with him and Congress. This was partly because the majority of Congress was Anti-Federalist, and the people in the nation having Anti-Federalist beliefs at the time. Later in his second term, things took a little turn. Thomas Jefferson found himself dealing with a revolt in the west started by Aaron Burr and John Randolph. The shocking thing is, Aaron Burr was Jefferson's VP in his first term. After this, Thomas Jefferson made sure he knew who he was working with in Congress. . One major decision that had the most positive outcome was the Abolition of the Slave Trade. Even though Jefferson was a slave owner himself, he realized the danger it could be to our country. With this Jefferson signed into law the bill that banned the importation of slaves. As a result, the number of slaves being imported was greatly reduced. It is possible that if Thomas Jefferson didn't sign this law, there could have been many problems with too many slaves in our country. This could have then given us a bad reputation as a slave ridden country. That is why limiting the slave trade was one of the most important decisions for Thomas Jefferson. . When looking at one of Thomas Jefferson's decisions that influenced future America, it was definitely the Louisiana Purchase, followed by the Lewis and Clark expedition. By buying the colossal piece of land, it opened up a vast area for our citizens to settle in. But before people could just go and see what might be out there, Thomas Jefferson sent Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to go scout out the land. This was very influential to future generations because it showed them how so many possibilities laid out there for people to have. It was a great step in showing how much a country can grow. All throughout Thomas Jefferson's two terms, the demographics of the country changed very much. . When looking at the past, you can see that America grew tremendously from the beginning of Jefferson's term to the end. The major events that allowed all of this to happen were the Louisiana Purchase, the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and the Abolition of the Slave Trade. First, the purchase of the Louisiana Territory allowed for more land in our country. This then gave the opportunity for more people to come over and expand our demographics. Later when Lewis and Clark explored the land, it gave people information on what is out there and what they could achieve if they came over to our country. Finally with the slave trade abolition, it prevented more Africans and Native Americans from being turned into slaves. This provided us with some diversity within our nation. So overall, Thomas Jefferson's decisions were able to help out our demographics as a country. . At the end of Thomas Jefferson's terms as President, the country was absolutely better than what it was from the start. He provided us with more land and the information about it and he also helped us with our slavery problem. But unfortunately, he also was part of the slave problem himself. So even after all the good things he provided for this country, he needs to receive an A-. This though, is nothing to be ashamed of. Without the presidency of Thomas Jefferson, who knows what kind of country we would be in today.
